Acton Images - Fall '09

I am a semi-pro photographer who has recently moved from Sudbury to Acton. I shoot primarily nature and landscape images, and would like to start a blog for other photographers in Acton to exhibit their work.

I hope the images on this blog will capture life in Acton - the events, history, and natural beauty of this town.

I look forward to seeing other posts and images.

ASK ACTON FORUM : A new "huge" 40B development off Newtown Road ?

Question from an ActonForum reader :

I've heard there is a "huge" 40B project being considered off Newtown Road. I was wondering about the details, like number of units, type of units, etc.

ActonForum reply :

No plans for a "huge" 40B project of Newtown Rd have been filed. There is a small 40B project on Lillian Rd which has been discussed at several Board of Selectmen meetings (last time on November 16th). Although the developer has increased the number of units from the original plan (to four 3-bedroom houses) this is not a "huge" project.

Congratulations to the Lord Jeffs

Congratulations to the 2009 Lord Jeffs for an undefeated season, a NESCAC championship and a thrilling victory over Williams. We're incredibly proud of our team and their 8-0 record.
On Saturday November 14th the Amherst College football team defeated Williams College 26 to 21 on Weston Field in Williamstown MA. It was the first time since 1984 that the Lord Jeffs closed a football season with a perfect record and it was the first time that Head Coach EJ Mills got his team through an unblemished season. Said Mills,

Give the Gift of .........Sports CAMP!

Every year after Thanksgiving dinner we draw names for holiday gifts for the kids. We consider everything that most families do like toys, games, clothes, clothes, clothes and the latest electronics gadgets and video games. (ugh!) Each holiday season, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and god parents are all faced with the hard decision of what gifts to give children. This year, though, as part of your holiday gift list, I urge you to think a bit outside the box and consider to give the Gift of Camp.

The Beacon on the Ropes

The Beacon, Acton’s weekly newspaper, is clearly suffering.

For this political observer, it takes about 2 minutes to read through the paper these days.

There are no compelling “letters to the editor,” unless you want to read "thank you" notes.

The news articles typically rehash what has happened at this or that local committee meeting. Nothing is covered consistently.

ASK ACTON FORUM : Beer and wine licence for the Acton Bowladrome

Question from an ActonForum reader :

I'm wondering if it's really a good idea to have a liquor license at the bowling alley that caters to "families"......from the article in the Beacon last week, I guess it's a done deal. Don't know all the details whether they only serve at certain times or what.....just curious.

ActonForum reply :

The Acton Bowladrome is owned and operated by the Sundberg family, long-time Acton residents. Their request for a beer and wine license was presented to the Board of Selectmen a few months ago, see :

The Boss: Simply Brilliant

After the final out of the World Series Wednesday night, George Steinbrenner's son Hal, Managing Partner of the New York Yankees, stepped to the podium and said "Dad, I know you're home watching with mom. This one's for you."

ASK ACTON FORUM : A town Crematory ?

Question from an ActonForum reader :

Is the town considering building a crematory at one of the town cemeteries?

ActonForum reply :

It is being considered. We sent the question to the town Cemetery Commission and received the following reply from Stephen Barrett (Town of Acton Finance Director) :

"A proposal was put forth at a staff meeting this year to build a Town owned Crematory.
The proposal is currently being vetted."

Individuals versus Institutions in U.S. Healthcare Debate

With the surprising results of the latest election cycle, where Republicans won the New Jersey governorship (beating incumbent Jon Corzine), perhaps some voters are getting a bit more suspicious of President Barack Obama's message of change. Perhaps some are beginning to wonder if change is always good, even when you don't know what the change is going to be. Many of the proposals we've been hearing lately from Washington are downright scary.

ASK ACTON FORUM: Proposed new daycare center on Main Street

Question from an ActonForum reader about the proposed new daycare center :

Hi, We've been in and out of town lately, and missed the upshot of the debate over the new daycare center at 27 & rt. 2. There was nothing in the Beacon about any approval and the debate seemed to have just rolled over and died.

Can you fill us in? Thanks.
