Local Students Reach Final Round of the Quiz Bowl!

Quiz bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, mathematics, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more. The defining feature of quiz bowl is the use of a “buzzer system” that allows players to interrupt the reading of a question when they think they know the answer. That added dimension of confidence, anticipation, skill, and rapid recall distinguishes “good quiz bowl” from televised shows with buzzers that lock competitors out until the question has been completed. Quiz bowl is played at an interscholastic level from middle school to college, and its main governing body is NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournaments).

Acton-Boxborough’s Quiz Bowl team has competed in several local tournaments this year, often placing in the top brackets. Due to this year’s outstanding performance, the team will attend one state tournament in Andover, MA and one national tournament in Atlanta, Georgia. Separate from the NAQT circuit of local, state, and national tournaments, A-B participated in Season 10 of WGBH’s High School Quiz Show, a televised trivia competition for Massachusetts high school teams. The team reached the finals of that tournament but disappointingly lost to Boston Latin School in the last game of the season. A-B previously won the entire competition during Season 5 of the televised show.

By participating in AB Quiz Bowl, students are exposed to a variety of topics that extend beyond the usual academic curriculum, like mythology, sports history, and philosophy. Students learn and practice valuable skills such as teamwork, coordinating tournaments and other events, and time management. They also have the opportunity to meet trivia-aficionado students from other high schools and establish friendships that frequently last through college and beyond.

There are few prerequisites for becoming a strong, dedicated quiz bowl player. The most important quality for a quiz bowl player is that they have a love of learning. All AB students are encouraged to attend one or more of the twice-weekly practices to help determine whether or not they would like to join the team. Members are asked to commit to attending at least one practice each week, which are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:50-4:00. Students are asked to be active participants throughout the year, which includes attending local tournaments and independently studying from leader-recommended online materials. The students strongly believe that consistent practice and meeting attendance have been vital in the development of this year’s cohesive team.
